Mysore, Mar 16: The police, who were searching for the culprits who had killed Smriti, working as assistant professor in a college, have arrested the main accused. Smriti was reportedly killed for marrying a person from a caste different from her own, against the wishes of her family members.
Mahadeva (30), elder brother of Smriti, was arrested on Wednesday March 14 night. Mahadeva revealed that cousin of the deceased, Shivu (27) was with him when Smriti was murdered. The police are on the look for Shivu now. On being produced in a court on Thursday, Mahadeva was handed over to five days’ police custody.
During preliminary inquiry, the police have found that not only Mahadeva and Shivu, but also Nanjamma, grandmother of the deceased, who used to stay with her granddaughter, was involved with this murder. The accused tried to strangulate Smriti, but she resisted. As such, they hit her on her temple, causing her death, the policemen were told.
Both the accused had fled after Smriti died. Mahadeva visited Sakleshpur, Hassan, and villages around Mysore after committing this heinous crime, while Nanjamma, who continued to stay with Smriti, had feigned innocence.
