Karkala, Jun 12: Vidushi Mahalakshmi Shenoy, a Hindustani classical vocalist from Karkala, has been selected for the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2024 in the Hindustani Vocal Music category. The award is presented by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
Her name featured in the official list released by the central government on June 10, bringing pride to the cultural fraternity of the coastal region.
A resident of Satyanarayana Nagar on Market Road in Karkala, Mahalakshmi developed an interest in music from a very young age. She had received the blessings of the late revered Sri Sudhindra Theertha Swamiji during her formative years and has earned widespread acclaim across the country as a prominent disciple of Grammy Award-winning Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

Apart from her achievements in music, Mahalakshmi has also excelled academically. She holds an MA in music (Hindustani vocal) from Udaipur University. In addition, she has completed an MSc in counselling at Moodbidri and pursued higher studies in Psychotherapy at Shivamogga.
Mahalakshmi is the daughter of Dr Prakash Shenoy, a general physician at Karkala Health Care, and Bharati Shenoy. She is also the granddaughter of former Udupi MP, the late Ranganath Shenoy.
