Mangaluru, Jun 13: The accused in the murder of an unidentified man near MSEZ at Arikere, Jokatte in Tokur under the Panambur police station limits was arrested in Goa by the Konkan Railway police and handed over to the Panambur police.
The arrested accused has been identified as Prashant Kumar (36), a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Darbhanga district of Bihar.
According to the police, the body of an unidentified man with his throat slit was found near MSEZ at Arikere, Jokatte, Tokur on the morning of June 10. Following information from passers-by, local residents Kishore and Ganesh visited the spot and found the body lying with a deep cut to the neck.
Blood stains were noticed near the gate in front of a rented house belonging to Monappa, located adjacent to the spot where the body was found. Suspicion fell on a tenant residing in the house, who had switched off his mobile phone and gone missing. Locals had lodged a complaint with Panambur police suspecting that the tenant had murdered the unidentified man by slitting his throat and later dumped the body.
Based on a tip-off that the accused was travelling to Goa aboard the Nizamuddin Express, the Konkan Railway police launched an operation to trace him. Acting on the directions of Konkan Railway police inspector Vikram Naik, a special team led by Jitendra Gowda was formed. Constables Wasim Sheikh, Manjunath Doddamani and Sanjay Gaonkar kept surveillance at the railway station.
Under the guidance of Konkan Railway SP Shekhar Prabhudesai, DySP Hiru Kavlekar and PI Vikram Naik, the team successfully apprehended the suspect using CCTV footage, technical analysis and intelligence inputs.
The arrested accused was subsequently handed over by the Goa Konkan Railway police station to the investigating officer, inspector Mohammed Salim of Panambur police station.
The accused is being brought to Mangaluru and will be produced before the court.
