Monterrey, Jun 15: Sweden midfielder Yasin Ayari delivered a dream start to his FIFA World Cup debut, scoring twice in a dominant Group H victory over Tunisia in Monterrey.

The 22-year-old opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match with a powerful volley that flew into the top corner of Tunisia’s net, giving Sweden an early lead. In an emotional gesture, Ayari briefly raised his hands before falling into sujood (prostration), acknowledging his deep personal and cultural ties with Tunisia.

Born in Sweden to a Tunisian father and Moroccan mother, Ayari was eligible to represent Tunisia but ultimately chose to play for his country of birth. His father, Azzouz Ayari, supported the decision, saying he wanted his son to represent the nation that raised him.

“I wanted him to play for Sweden. He should feel like he is giving back to the country that took care of him,” his father told Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet.

Ayari began his football journey at age seven with Rasunda in Solna before progressing to Swedish club AIK, where he made his senior debut in 2020. He later joined English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023 and made his international debut for Sweden the same year.

Despite his decision to represent Sweden, Ayari acknowledged the emotional complexity of facing Tunisia, the country of his father’s heritage. Ahead of the match, he admitted it felt “crazy” to be drawn against them in the World Cup group stage.

The young midfielder capped off his standout performance with a stunning second goal in the 95th minute, sealing a comprehensive win for Sweden. Unlike his first goal, Ayari celebrated the late strike with teammates and fans, soaking in the applause from the Swedish supporters.
