Udupi, Jun 15: A 17-year-old minor girl, reportedly suffering from severe emotional distress, created panic at the Government Bus Stand in Bannanje, Udupi, on Monday after allegedly attacking social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalpady with a knife when he attempted to help and protect her.

Vishu Shetty narrowly escaped injury after the girl suddenly pulled a knife from her bag and lunged at him. The incident caused panic among passengers and bystanders at the busy bus stand.

The girl's mother reportedly fainted after witnessing the commotion. At the request of the girl's father, both the girl and her mother were later admitted to KMC Hospital, Manipal, for medical attention.

According to available information, the minor girl, a native of Uttara Kannada district, had been experiencing emotional and mental distress for reasons yet to be confirmed. On Monday morning, she reportedly left home without informing her parents and boarded a government bus bound for Udupi. After learning of her whereabouts, her parents followed the bus in their car and alerted the concerned authorities.

Upon receiving information about the situation, social worker Vishu Shetty rushed to the Bannanje Government Bus Stand and, with the assistance of police personnel and officials from the Child Protection Department, attempted to take the girl into safe custody.

However, during the intervention, the girl allegedly lost control and suddenly drew a knife from her bag before charging at Vishu Shetty. He escaped the attack by a narrow margin. Despite the danger, Vishu Shetty managed to overpower the girl and remove the knife from her possession, preventing further harm. The girl also punched two passengers at the bus stand, creating a tense atmosphere and causing concern among the public.

The rescue operation was assisted by Rashmi from the Women police station and Sunanda and Nagarathna from the Child Protection Department.

Preliminary information suggests that emotional stress arising from a possible relationship issue may have contributed to the girl's condition. According to her father, she had become acquainted with a youth from another state through Instagram and had been in regular contact with him over the phone.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, while the girl is receiving medical care and support.
