MAHE welcomes major general (Dr) Mathews Jacob VSM (Retd) as pro vice chancellor, health sciences

Udupi, Jun 16: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University, welcomed major general (Dr) Mathews Jacob, VSM (Retd), as its pro vice chancellor – Health sciences, effective June 15.

Major General (Dr) Mathews Jacob brings over 36 years of service in the Armed Forces Medical Services, Pune, with experience spanning clinical care, medical education, research, and healthcare leadership. An accomplished anaesthesiologist and critical care specialist, he has contributed extensively to patient care in high-acuity environments and to strengthening healthcare delivery systems.

He holds an MBBS and MD in anaesthesiology and critical care from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, along with a DNB in anaesthesiology and Membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS). His additional qualifications include an executive postgraduate diploma in hospital administration from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai; a postgraduate diploma in medical law and ethics from National Law School of India University, Bengaluru; Fellowship of the American College of Emergency Medicine Experts; certification in geriatric medicine; and training in strategic defence management.

With a Fellowship in Advanced Medical Education, he has contributed to academic development through teaching, postgraduate training, curriculum design, and mentorship. He has authored more than 35 publications in national and international journals and has guided several postgraduate dissertations.

In leadership roles, he has led initiatives such as the establishment of bone marrow and renal transplant programmes, expansion of super-speciality services, modernization of intensive care units and operation theatres, and strengthening of oncology and transplant services.

He has also contributed to healthcare quality and accreditation as a NABH assessor and governing council member of the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO).

Major general (Dr) Jacob was conferred the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) by the honourable president of India in recognition of his distinguished service in 2023.
