Bantwal, Jun 17: The Vittal police have successfully apprehended a notorious thief who had been absconding and evading court appearances in connection with multiple theft cases.

The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Salam, also known as K M Salam or 'Dollar Salam', a resident of Chikkamudnoor in Puttur.

He was wanted in connection with two major theft cases registered at the Vittal police station—Crime No 24/2020 and Crime No 34/2022—both filed under Sections 457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Salam had repeatedly failed to appear before the court and had gone into hiding.

Acting on reliable information, the Vittal police tracked him down and arrested him near the Puttur railway station on Tuesday, June 16. Following his arrest, he was produced before the court, which subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.

Police sources also revealed that another case (Crime No 45/2023) is registered against him at the Puttur Town police station under IPC Sections 353, 332, and 504. An arrest warrant had already been issued against him in this case as well, owing to his continuous failure to attend court hearings.
