Mangaluru, Jun 18: In a highly concerning development, a report has confirmed that the water supplied by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in certain areas is unfit for consumption. Over 100 people from Bejai New Road, Battagudde, and surrounding areas have fallen ill, complaining of vomiting, diarrhea, and other health issues after consuming the contaminated water.
For the past month, residents in these areas, including children, have been frequently falling ill. Initially, the local well water was tested and found unfit for drinking. However, despite avoiding well water, the health issues, particularly among children, persisted. Subsequent testing of the tap water supplied by the MCC revealed that it was also contaminated and completely unsafe for consumption.

Pipeline damage suspected
It is suspected that the contamination is due to the close proximity of drinking water pipelines and underground drainage lines in several parts of the city. Residents and experts fear that recent excavation works for various projects might have damaged the drinking water pipes, causing sewage to seep into the drinking water supply.
MLA blames state govt
Reacting to the incident, Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath strongly criticized the state government, attributing such lapses to its negligence. He alleged that due to the state government's delay in holding the city corporation elections, the officials are operating without any accountability or oversight. He demanded that the administration immediately identify the source of the water contamination and resolve the issue without further delay.
