Bengaluru, Jun 19: Karnataka's energy sector has earned a total revenue of Rs 3,685.29 crore by selling electricity to the grid over the last four years.
According to data from the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), from 2023-24 to June 8, 2026, a total of 6,531.33 million units (MU) of electricity were sold at an average rate of Rs 5.64 per unit. During the same period, 14,082.88 MU of electricity was purchased at an average rate of Rs 6.47 per unit, resulting in an expenditure of Rs 9,111.65 crore.
A senior KPCL official said that large quantities of electricity were sold during the monsoon season, particularly when solar power generation was high and market prices were relatively low. On the other hand, electricity was purchased only during peak periods in summer when both demand and prices were high. As a result, the average selling price remained lower than the purchase price.
The official added that the state is now focusing on increasing power generation from renewable energy sources and earning greater revenue through electricity sales to the grid.
The highest volume of electricity sales was recorded in 2024-25, when 3,785.25 MU of power was sold at Rs 5.19 per unit, generating revenue of Rs 1,965.64 crore.
Meanwhile, the highest volume of electricity purchases was recorded in 2025-26, when 5,971.71 MU was procured at Rs 5.34 per unit, at a total cost of Rs 3,190.49 crore.
In 2023-24, the state sold 674.01 MU of electricity at Rs 4.07 per unit, earning Rs 274.61 crore. During the same period, 3,311.28 MU was purchased at Rs 7.63 per unit, resulting in an expenditure of Rs 2,526.64 crore.
Officials said the state government is actively working to increase solar and wind power generation. This would reduce dependence on conventional sources of electricity and align with the energy policies of both the Central and State governments. It would also help Karnataka sell surplus electricity to the grid.
"We can sell more electricity to the grid. We are also exploring possibilities to increase hydropower generation. Since storing electricity remains a challenge at present, selling it to the grid is the best available option," an official said.
