Mangaluru: Expert College concludes fourth Food Safety Week with valedictory event

Mangaluru, Jun 24: Expert PU College, Valachil, in association with Spices N Chefs — a unit of Spade Integrated Services Pvt Ltd — concluded its fourth consecutive Food Safety Week with a valedictory ceremony. Organised to mark World Food Safety Day, the event saw enthusiastic participation from staff and students, reflecting a shared commitment to food safety and public health.

The initiative was held under the guidance of Prof Narendra L Nayak, chairman, and Dr Ushaprabha N Nayak, vice chairperson, Expert Group of Institutions, whose continued leadership has shaped the programme year after year.

Ankush N Nayak, IT director, Expert Group of Institutions, was the chief guest. In his address, he commended the organisers for their sustained outreach and urged participants to make safe food practices part of daily life, noting their importance to public health.

Presiding over the function, Dinesh Palliyil, managing director, Spade Integrated Services Pvt Ltd, emphasized that food safety awareness must begin at home. He noted that individual responsibility directly strengthens institutional practices.
The week featured competitions including calligraphy, poster making, extempore speech, food safety quiz, jumbled words, and reel making, designed to make learning engaging and impactful.

Expert-led sessions were central to the programme. Dr Prerana Hegde, senior dietitian and head of dietetics at Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte; Loshanya, nutritionist, dietitian, and research scholar at St Aloysius Deemed to be University, Mangaluru; and Dr Ahad, campus doctor, Expert PU College, Valachil, covered food nutrition, healthy eating habits, personal health, and first-aid practices for food handlers.

Participants also visited the Central Kitchen of the Food Craft Institute at Yenepoya University, Deralakatte, and Bhagini Samaj Shishu Nilaya, Jeppu, taking the food safety message beyond campus and reinforcing civic responsibility.

Winners across all categories were felicitated with certificates and prizes during the valedictory.

The programme was coordinated by M C Souparnika, quality manager, with strategic guidance from Rajesh E T, unit head.
