Mangaluru: CFAL students secure AIR 16, 38 in IIIT Hyderabad UGEE, 4 among top national performers

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jun 26: Four students of CFAL, Mangaluru, have secured national ranks in the Undergraduate Entrance Examination (UGEE) conducted by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H), one of India’s most respected institutions for computer science and research-oriented engineering education.

Leading the institution's performance is Mrinal D Bhat, who secured All India Rank (AIR) 16, followed closely by Lauren M Patrao at AIR 38, while Rishon Fernandes and Ira Jain secured AIR 126 and AIR 251, respectively.

An exam that tests the mind, not just memory

UGEE serves as the gateway to IIIT Hyderabad’s highly selective dual-degree programmes, which combine undergraduate study with advanced research training. Unlike conventional engineering entrance examinations that primarily test speed and syllabus coverage, UGEE is designed to identify students with strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving ability, and an aptitude for research.

The examination is widely regarded as one of the country’s most distinctive admission processes for students interested in computer science, artificial intelligence, computational sciences, and research.

Admission through UGEE involves two stages. Candidates first take the national-level examination, consisting of the SUPR (Subject Proficiency) and REAP (Research Aptitude) papers. The shortlisted students then undergo a rigorous interview process.

Against the backdrop of such a demanding selection process, the presence of four UGEE rank-holders from the same institution in a single year highlights the strength of CFAL’s preparation. While Mrinal’s AIR 16 and Lauren’s AIR 38 place them among the country’s top performers, the ranks secured by Rishon and Ira underscore the depth and consistency of talent being nurtured at the institution.

"A different kind of excellence"

“UGEE rewards a different kind of excellence,” said a member of CFAL's academic team. “It seeks students who can think independently, reason clearly, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence. The success of Mrinal, Lauren, Rishon, and Ira reflects years of disciplined learning and intellectual curiosity. We are proud to see them recognised by one of India's premier institutions for research-oriented computer science education.”

Beyond JEE and NEET

At CFAL, students are encouraged to pursue opportunities beyond conventional entrance examinations. Alongside preparation for JEE and NEET, the institution actively supports participation in Olympiads, research-oriented programmes, and the entrance examinations of institutions such as ISI, CMI, IISER, and IIITs. The objective is not merely success in examinations but the development of deep understanding, independent thinking, and academic excellence.

The performance of the four rank holders highlights the growing presence of Mangaluru students in some of the country’s most competitive and intellectually demanding entrance examinations. Their achievement is expected to inspire other students to explore pathways to research, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and technological innovation.
