Mexico, Jun 27: Spain secured the top spot in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Uruguay 1-0, while debutants Cape Verde scripted history by reaching the knockout stage.
Álex Baena scored the decisive goal in the 42nd minute after a mistake from Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, handing Spain the crucial victory and ending Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.
The result saw Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay eliminated from the tournament, while Cape Verde moved ahead of them into second place in the group standings after playing out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia.

The draw took Cape Verde’s tally to three points, enough for the World Cup newcomers to qualify for the knockout stage in their historic first appearance at the tournament.
With the group stage positions confirmed, Spain are expected to face Austria in the Round of 32, while Cape Verde will take on Lionel Messi-led Argentina in the next phase.
