Mangaluru: Three killed as compound wall collapses on houses amid heavy rain in Kankanady

Mangaluru, Jul 1: Three persons, including two young girls, lost their lives after a compound wall collapsed onto a row of rented houses following heavy rainfall at Garodi in the Kankanady police station limits during the early hours of Tuesday, July 1.

The incident occurred between 4.45 am and 5.00 am at Marial House in Garodi, where a compound wall gave way due to incessant rain.

Four families were residing in rented houses located just below the compound wall. The rear walls of all four houses collapsed in the incident, while two families were directly affected.

One of the affected families was that of Lalbabu, a native of Bihar, who had been residing in the house for the past eight years with his wife Indu and their four daughters—Alka (14), Anusha (11), Anamika Chaurasia (8), and Pari (4).

Lalbabu, Indu, Alka, and Anusha were rescued safely. However, Anamika Chaurasia (8) and Pari (4) were pulled out unconscious from the debris and were declared dead.

The second affected family was that of Balakrishna (48), originally from Bihar, who has been residing behind the Kankanady Police Station in Kankanady village for the past 20 years. He was rescued safely, while his wife Shanta (46) was found unconscious beneath the debris. She later succumbed to her injuries.

All the victims were shifted to Father Muller Hospital, where the three were declared dead.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services personnel, and local residents carried out the rescue operation. Kankanady police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
