Mangaluru, Jul 1: Mangaluru MLA Vedavyas Kamath expressed grief over the compound wall collapse incident and said that he would visit the hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured.
Speaking about the incident, the MLA said that local residents had informed him that the compound wall was an old structure. He added that he had spoken with the Deputy Commissioner and instructed officials to provide all possible assistance through the labour department and the government.

Kamath said that he had reviewed the possibilities of providing compensation to those affected. He also stated that allegations have been raised regarding the collapse being caused by a weak compound wall, and that engineers must submit a detailed report to determine the exact reason.
He further mentioned that the compound wall was constructed many years ago and, as Mangaluru has several high and low-lying areas, there is a possibility that the structure may not have had enough strength to withstand the conditions.
The MLA said that special government funds should be provided for the construction of retaining walls in vulnerable areas of Mangaluru city to prevent such incidents in the future.
