New Delhi, Jul 7: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday unveiled and flagged off the trophies for the Durand Cup 2026 in New Delhi, expressing confidence that the participation of new teams would further enhance the popularity of Asia's oldest football tournament.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu noted that teams will compete this year for the Durand Cup, the President's Cup and the Shimla Trophy. She welcomed the participation of a Sri Lankan team in the tournament, saying the inclusion of new teams would make the prestigious competition even more popular.
The President extended her best wishes to all participating teams and players, urging them to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and elevate the stature of the historic tournament through outstanding performances.

She also expressed happiness that, besides Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal and Shillong, Ranchi has been added as a host city for this year's edition of the tournament.
Highlighting football's ability to unite people, President Murmu said the sport has a unique power to bring communities together while promoting values such as discipline, determination and teamwork.
She observed that India still has a long journey ahead to become a leading football nation and called upon all stakeholders to contribute towards the growth of the sport. She expressed hope that the Durand Cup would continue to serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing football talent across the country.
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan were also present at the event.
