Mapusa, Jul 8: A nurse sustained critical injuries after she was allegedly stabbed multiple times on the premises of the Sub-District Hospital in Tuem on Tuesday evening while leaving work. The suspected attacker was apprehended by members of the public and later handed over to the Pernem Police.

According to eyewitnesses, the accused, a resident of Korgao, allegedly attacked the nurse, who is from Vazri, stabbing her four to five times before she collapsed. She was immediately rushed for emergency medical treatment and is reported to be in critical condition.

Police have registered a case and taken the accused into custody. Investigators are questioning him to determine the sequence of events and establish the motive behind the attack, which remains unclear.

The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of healthcare workers, particularly those employed in and around the hospital.

Deepak Kalangutkar, a functionary of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) who resides near the hospital, said similar incidents had occurred in the area previously. He pointed out that the presence of a nearby industrial estate, where many women are employed, underscores the need for stronger security arrangements and increased police patrolling to ensure public safety.

Reacting to the incident, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai described the attack as a serious breakdown of law and order. He called for the immediate arrest and speedy prosecution of those responsible, stressing that strict accountability was essential in such cases.
