Mangaluru, Jul 10: Ahead of the Onam festival rush, Southern Railway has started announcing special train services to handle the surge in passenger demand, bringing relief to thousands of travellers heading towards Kerala. As part of its first announcement, the railway has introduced a special train service connecting Mangaluru and Chennai during the festive period.
According to the notification issued by Southern Railway, Train No. 06126 will run from Mangaluru Central to Chennai Egmore, while Train No. 06125 will operate in the return direction from Chennai Egmore to Mangaluru Central.

The special services are aimed at meeting the additional travel demand during Onam, one of Kerala’s biggest festivals, when lakhs of people travel to their hometowns from major cities including Bengaluru, Chennai and Mangaluru.
During the festive season, regular trains often witness overwhelming demand, with passengers struggling to secure confirmed tickets. The introduction of additional special trains is expected to reduce the pressure on existing services and make festival travel more convenient for passengers.
While the announcement has brought cheer among travellers, Southern Railway is yet to release details regarding the commencement date, stoppages and complete schedule of the special trains.
Although the original report headline mentioned that the service would begin from July 13, the official railway announcement has not provided confirmation on the date or other operational details, leaving passengers awaiting further clarity.
The Mangaluru–Chennai service is the first announcement in Southern Railway’s planned series of Onam special trains. More services connecting Kerala with other regions and major cities are expected to be announced in the coming days to cater to the festive travel rush.
Passengers have been advised to check Southern Railway’s official updates for confirmed information regarding timings, stoppages, reservations and other details.
