Tripura DGP Anurag found dead at Police Headquarters, cause under investigation

Agartala, Jul 20: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag was found dead under unexplained circumstances inside the bathroom attached to his office at the State Police Headquarters on Monday, officials said.

The senior IPS officer was immediately taken to Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Dr Pradip Bhowmik, Head of the Department of Medicine at the hospital, said Anurag showed no signs of life when he was brought in. He added that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

"The body has been forwarded for post-mortem, and only the examination report will establish the precise cause of death," Dr Bhowmik told reporters.

As of now, neither the Tripura government nor the state Police Headquarters has issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the DGP's death.

A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, Anurag assumed office as the state's Director General of Police on May 17 last year, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Before becoming the state's police chief, he headed the Intelligence wing as Director General of Police (Intelligence).

Anurag possessed an extensive academic and professional background. He held a postgraduate degree in Food Technology from the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, a Master's degree in Police Management from Osmania University, and a postgraduate diploma in Cyber Crimes from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. He was also a Certified Fraud Examiner accredited by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), USA.

Throughout his career, Anurag served in several key policing roles across Tripura. Between 1995 and 2003, he worked as Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Longtharai Valley, Superintendent of Police of the then undivided West and South Tripura districts, Superintendent of Police (Special Branch), and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Headquarters).

He also gained international experience during 2003-04 while serving with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.

From 2005 to 2013, he was on central deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he served as Superintendent of Police and later Deputy Inspector General. After returning to Tripura, he functioned as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) between 2013 and 2016.

He again served on central deputation from 2016 to 2023, holding senior positions in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the CBI, where he served as Joint Director and Additional Director.

Among his notable assignments, Anurag also chaired the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death.
