Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 22: Coastal Karnataka, traditionally known as one of the rainiest regions in the state, has witnessed a significant rainfall deficit this monsoon, raising concerns among farmers. From January 1 to July 19, both Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts have recorded a sharp shortfall in rainfall, affecting agricultural activities.

Dakshina Kannada received only 1,174.9 mm of rainfall against the normal 1,929.8 mm during the period, registering a 39% deficit. Similarly, Udupi recorded a 39% rainfall deficit, receiving 1,348.2 mm against the normal 2,203.4 mm.

The lack of rainfall during June, a crucial month for paddy cultivation and transplantation, has dealt a major blow to the farming community. During the month, Dakshina Kannada recorded a 57% rainfall deficit, while Udupi recorded a 50% shortfall.

Among the taluks in Dakshina Kannada, Puttur recorded the highest rainfall deficit at 48%, followed by Bantwal and Mangaluru with 45% each, Moodbidri with 44%, Beltangady with 43%, Ullal with 37%, Kadaba with 27%, and Sullia with 26%.

The situation is in stark contrast to the same period last year, when both districts witnessed abundant rainfall.
