Bantwal, Jul 22: Police have secured a significant lead in connection with the attempted burglary at a bank in Farangipete, sources said.
The investigation has gathered pace, and a special team headed by the Bantwal additional superintendent of police (ASP) has launched an intensive probe to trace the accused, sources added.
The burglary attempt took place on the night of July 12 at a bank branch in Farangipete. The culprits allegedly entered the bank by cutting through the roof. However, they were unable to open the bank locker and fled the scene without stealing any valuables.
Police have been investigating the case from multiple angles and have questioned several individuals. During the course of the inquiry, investigators reportedly obtained a strong lead, following which a separate team was constituted to pursue the investigation.
As the bank remained closed on account of the second Saturday, police suspect the burglary attempt took place sometime between Saturday and Sunday. The investigation had earlier revealed that the accused had cut the connections to the bank's alarm system and CCTV cameras during the incident.
It is learnt that only a brief CCTV clip showing a person wearing a face mask and gloves was available. The identification process became more challenging as CCTV footage from the surrounding area was either unclear or insufficient to establish the identity of the suspects.
Meanwhile, even as the investigation into the bank burglary attempt was progressing, police had to simultaneously handle the probe into the murder of a young woman at B C Road, resulting in parallel investigations into both cases.
