New Delhi, Jul 24: The Centre is set to introduce stricter measures against examination malpractices, with proposed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 likely to bring harsher jail terms and higher penalties for those involved in question paper leaks.

Sources said the government is considering changes that could impose imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines running into crores for offenders involved in organised examination fraud.

The proposed amendments come a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the growing concerns over paper leaks and assured strict action against those responsible. The changes are expected to be discussed during the Union Cabinet meeting.

The amended law may also include provisions for setting up fast-track courts to ensure speedy trials in paper leak cases and prevent prolonged legal proceedings.

Under the existing provisions, individuals involved in examination-related unfair practices face imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of up to Rs 10 lac.

Service providers conducting public examinations and found guilty of malpractice can face penalties of up to Rs 1 crore, while members of organised networks involved in exam fraud are liable for imprisonment of five to 10 years along with a minimum fine of Rs 1 crore.

The proposed amendments aim to strengthen the legal framework against paper leaks and protect the future of millions of students appearing for competitive and public examinations across the country.

The move comes amid nationwide concerns over alleged irregularities in major examinations and demands for strict action against those involved in compromising the integrity of the examination system.
