Heavy rain alert for Goa, Konkan; IMD warns of travel disruptions and landslide risks

Panaji, Jul 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Goa and the Konkan region, warning of possible travel disruptions due to waterlogging, poor visibility and landslide risks.

Both North Goa and South Goa districts are under an orange alert for heavy rainfall, while Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts have also been issued similar warnings.

Authorities are monitoring coastal areas as high tides combined with heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in vulnerable locations.

The weather conditions are expected to affect road travel between Mumbai, Pune and Goa, with commuters likely to face delays on major highways. Travellers have been advised to check weather updates before starting journeys, especially through ghat sections.

The National Highway 66 (NH-66) remains a concern during the monsoon due to ongoing construction work and the possibility of landslides. Heavy rains often trigger rockfalls in areas such as Tamhini and Varandha ghats. Motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway have been urged to maintain caution as slippery roads and reduced visibility may increase the risk of accidents.

Traffic movement could slow down near vulnerable stretches, including the Khandala tunnel and Amrutanjan Bridge. Some ghat routes may also face temporary restrictions during intense rainfall.

In Goa, several beaches have been placed under restrictions due to rough sea conditions, with swimming and water sports activities prohibited in many areas. Strong currents and high waves have made coastal activities unsafe.

Authorities have also restricted entry to certain waterfalls and tourist spots in Maharashtra following heavy rainfall to prevent accidents. Public transport services and private buses may experience delays due to the adverse weather conditions.

Officials have advised people to remain cautious, avoid trekking in remote hilly areas and carry necessary emergency supplies while travelling during the heavy rainfall period.
