Kuwait Konkans Ladies' Throwball Tournament Held

Kuwait, Mar 22: The Kuwait Konkans along with their team supporters, organized their maiden Ladies Throwball Tournament recently at the Central School Grounds, Abbasiya, here. The main goal of the event was to drown out the sorrows of winter and bring the women out of the shadows, into the limelight of living their lives to the fullest potential.

Six throwball teams contested for the Kuwait Konkans trophies. The participating teams were AECK, Al-Rathath, DUBOP, Dynamics, Kuwait Supers and Starz.

The chief guest, Shantha Maria, chairperson of Throwball Association Kuwait, alongwith the sponsors, Anitha Fernandes on behalf of the events main sponsor John Paul Fernandes, Felix D’souza, owner of Al-Rathath Est. Kuwait, Kuwait Konkans founder members Pascal Pinto and Dainy Coutinho, Rocky and Jovita D’Souza, Wilson D’Souza and the tournament referees Ramesh and Suresh were called on to the dais and were felicitated with flowers by Ivan Mendes.

Lighting of the lamp was done by the chief guest, founder members, sponsors, Kuwait Konkans team manager and captain. Prayer service was led by Rony D’Cunha. Monica Cornelia welcomed the gathring.

A special recognition award was presented to Laveena Lasrado of Starz team for her contribution to throw ball.

Kuwait Konkans founder member and former president of Agnesian Alumni, Dainy Cutinho spoke about the women power and called upon all the participating teams to play with a spirit of sportsmanship. The chief guest, Shantha Maria congratulated the Kuwait Konkans team for officiating the tournament and for all the hard work put forward in making this event happen. Vote of thanks was proposed by Beena Almeida. The tournament was declared open by releasing the balloons into the air by the chief guest, sponsors, referees, founder members and team captains.

The inaugural match was played for 14 points between Kuwait Konkans and the best two players from each team and Kuwait Konkans emerged as the winners.

After initial league matches, Starz and Al-Rathath, Dubop and Dynamics qualified for the semifinals. After long and exciting semi-finals, Al-Rathath and Dynamics teams managed to get through to the finals. Both teams played their hearts out, in a keenly-fought thrilling match who was watched by supporters of both teams and the other participating teams. Finally, Dynamics managed triumph over from Al-Rathath with the final tally at 21-16 and 21-17.

The third place was awarded to Starz who won against Dubop and was perhaps the longest among all the matches.

There was an encouraging game for the new teams AECK and Kuwait Supers and Kuwait Supers was awarded the Consolation Trophy.

Large crowds cheered their teams and live commentary by  Jasmine D’Cunha and the young talents Agnel and Deepak Andrade added to the vibrant atmosphere.

The tournament winners, runners-up, best receiver, best smasher and best spinner prizes were presented by the main sponsors of the event and the other teams were provided with Kuwait Konkans Souvenirs.
