Guwahati, Jul 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the flood situation in Upper Assam is showing signs of improvement, with water levels gradually receding in several affected areas. He, however, stressed that rescue and relief operations are continuing at full pace to support those impacted by the floods.
Speaking to reporters after attending a public event at Azara, where he joined citizens in listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Sarma said the government is closely tracking the evolving flood situation, particularly in Nazira in Sivasagar district, one of the worst-affected regions.
The Chief Minister said rescue teams and relief agencies are working round the clock to ensure uninterrupted supply of drinking water, food, medicines and other essential items to people living in flood-hit areas.
"The floodwaters are steadily receding and the overall situation is becoming better. Despite this improvement, relief operations will continue until all affected areas return to normal," Sarma said.
He reiterated that the state government is fully committed to supporting every flood-affected family and is coordinating closely with district administrations and disaster management agencies to ensure timely assistance reaches even the remotest villages.
Sarma also announced that he would personally visit the affected districts within the next two days to review the flood situation on the ground and monitor the progress of rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.
"I plan to visit the flood-affected areas within the next one or two days to assess the situation firsthand and ensure relief work is progressing effectively," he said.
The Assam government has intensified relief measures across the affected districts, with officials monitoring embankments, distributing relief materials and providing emergency assistance to displaced residents.
As efforts continue to restore normalcy, authorities are also keeping a close watch on river levels and weather forecasts to respond quickly to any fresh developments. Residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and cooperate with local officials as rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations continue.
