Hyderabad, Jul 27: A narcotics enforcement operation in Hyderabad took a violent turn after a suspected drug trafficker allegedly drove his car into police personnel while attempting to evade arrest, leaving three officers injured. In a separate incident the same night, a speeding car allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist struck and killed a pedestrian in the city.
The first incident occurred on Sunday at Tilak Road in the Abids area, where the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) had launched a surveillance operation following intelligence inputs about an illegal drug transaction.
According to police, officers observed a suspect arriving in a car near a footwear store, where he allegedly handed over a packet to another individual. The recipient was immediately apprehended by the H-NEW team.
As officers moved in to detain the driver, he initially appeared to cooperate by pulling the vehicle to the side. However, instead of surrendering, he allegedly accelerated suddenly and rammed the car into the police team in an attempt to escape.
Police Constable Mahender Yadav sustained a fractured leg in the incident, while Inspector Sreekanth and Constable Vamseedhar suffered minor injuries during the pursuit that followed.
The suspect, identified as Saif, a resident of Hyderabad's Husseini Alam locality, was eventually intercepted and arrested near Afzal Gunj after a police chase.
Mahender Yadav was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Based on his complaint, police registered attempt-to-murder cases against the accused at both Abids and Afzal Gunj police stations. Investigators are continuing to probe the case.
In another incident late Sunday night, a pedestrian lost his life after being hit by a speeding car near the office of the Rajendranagar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
Police said the victim was crossing the road when the vehicle, allegedly being driven recklessly by an intoxicated driver, struck him. The impact proved fatal, and the pedestrian died at the scene.
Witnesses and local residents chased the fleeing vehicle and managed to stop it before handing the driver over to the police. A young woman was also travelling in the car at the time of the accident.
The driver, identified as Sai Nithin, was allegedly heavily under the influence of alcohol when he was taken into custody. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the fatal accident.
