Chennai, Jul 28: Two persons were killed and three others sustained critical injuries in a chain-reaction accident involving a motorcycle, a luxury bus, a car and a tempo van on the Aiyyur Agaram railway overpass in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district on Tuesday.

According to police, the accident occurred after a motorcycle travelling across the overpass reportedly went out of control and crossed into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with an oncoming luxury bus.

The bus driver applied sudden brakes following the impact, triggering a chain collision as a car and a tempo van travelling behind failed to stop in time and rammed into the vehicles ahead. The crash left all the vehicles badly damaged, with several occupants trapped inside.

The motorcycle rider, identified as Boopathy, a resident of Narasingapuram in Villupuram district, died on the spot. John Anbazhagan (55), a resident of Mudichur in Chennai who was travelling in the car, also succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Police personnel, assisted by local residents, launched rescue operations and extricated those trapped inside the damaged vehicles. The injured, identified as Lazar, Solomon and Balaji, the car driver, were shifted to the Villupuram Government General Hospital.

Hospital sources said all three suffered serious injuries and remain in critical condition.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the railway overpass for several hours. Police regulated traffic while cranes were used to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal movement.

Villupuram police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said eyewitness accounts and other evidence are being examined to determine the exact cause of the accident.
