Glasgow, Jul 28: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha congratulated India's medal winners after an impressive day at the Commonwealth Games, praising high jumper Sarvesh Kushare and para-shot putters Sharmila and Shilpa Shyla for their performances in Glasgow.

In a post on X, Usha lauded the athletes for adding to India's medal tally.

"A spectacular end to last evening for our #TeamIndia. Proud of the athletes and their efforts. Congratulations to Sarvesh Kushare on his Silver win in High Jump, and Sharmila on her Gold, and Shilpa Shyla on her Bronze in the Women's Shot Put F57 event. A lovely day to build on," she wrote.

Sharmila created history by winning the gold medal in the women's shot put F57 with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, becoming the first Indian para-athlete to claim a Commonwealth Games gold medal. Her victory also ended India's 20-year wait for a para-athletics gold at the Games.

India secured a double podium finish in the same event after Shilpa Shyla was awarded the bronze medal following a successful post-event protest that overturned a valid throw by Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi. Shilpa's personal-best effort of 7.26 metres earned her a place on the podium, marking India's first double medal finish in a Commonwealth Games para-athletics event.

Earlier, Sarvesh Kushare won the silver medal in the men's high jump, further boosting India's athletics campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the athletes on X, describing Sharmila's gold as a historic achievement that ended India's two-decade wait for a para-athletics gold at the Commonwealth Games.

He also praised Shilpa for winning bronze with a personal-best throw and congratulated Sarvesh Kushare for securing silver in the men's high jump, calling his performance outstanding and wishing him continued success.
