Bengaluru, Jul 29: The Karnataka Regional Commission for Vocation and Formation jointly with C R I Karnataka Region organized a two-day seminar on "discernment of spirits in spiritual direction" at KROSS, Bengaluru. The sessions were led by Fr Jossie D’Mello SJ and coordinated by Fr Bonaventure Rodrigues, director of the Regional Commission. The seminar brought together formators and spiritual directors to deepen their understanding of guiding young people in today’s world.

Drawing from Christus Vivit and Vatican II’s Gaudium et Spes 44, Fr Jossie emphasized the need to look at youth “with the eyes of the Trinity.” He cautioned against offering “prepackaged answers” without listening to the real questions of young people, reminding participants that “each young person’s heart is holy ground.”

The resource person explained discernment as the sifting of interior movements; thoughts, feelings, desires and doubts to discover their origin and orientation. Using St Ignatius’ guidelines, participants reflected on the signs of spiritual consolation and desolation, the tactics of the evil spirit, and the importance of patience, introspection, and dialogue during times of crisis. The pedagogy of experience – reflection – action was highlighted as essential for ongoing discernment.

The sessions concluded with practical tools for spiritual directors: becoming aware of interior movements, interpreting them in the light of the Gospel, and judging them with humility. Fr. Jossie stressed that God is present even in desolation and that patience is the key counterattack against the enemy’s pressure to decide hastily. Participants were encouraged to examine motivations, guard against false consolation, and store up the fruits of consolation to face future trials. The seminar ended with a renewed commitment to accompany youth with closeness, farsightedness, and faith, recognizing the “little flame that continues to burn” in every young heart.
