Santos, Jul 29: Brazil's all-time leading scorer Neymar has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 16-year career with the national team following Brazil's exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision after Santos' 4-2 victory over Venezuela's Universidad Central in the Copa Sudamericana, putting an end to speculation about his international future.

Brazil's World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a defeat to Norway, a match that proved to be Neymar's final appearance for the five-time world champions.

"My time with the national team is over. I made history, I was very happy, I gave my blood, my life, I always fought for the yellow jersey, but now I don't want to anymore," Neymar was quoted as saying after the match.

Neymar retires as Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer, having represented the country in multiple FIFA World Cups, Copa America tournaments and the Olympic Games.

The veteran forward said he had no regrets about his international career, adding that he had always given his all while playing for Brazil.

Neymar also dismissed reports claiming he had criticised and intimidated younger teammates in the Santos dressing room after a recent league match.

He clarified that his remarks were intended only to demand higher standards from the team and insisted that, as captain, he had every right to express his views.

"It is sad and annoying, but it is not my fault. These stories reach a lot of people," he said, adding that senior players including Lucas Verissimo and Gabigol had also addressed the squad after the match.

Despite the off-field speculation, Neymar helped Santos secure a 4-2 win over Universidad Central, with the Brazilian club advancing to the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, where they will face Ecuadorian side Macara.
