Mangaluru, July 29: In one of the largest drug disposal operations undertaken in the region, Mangaluru City police on Wednesday destroyed narcotic substances worth approximately Rs 82 crore, including large consignments of MDMA, ganja, charas and hydro weed, following permission from the competent court.
According to the police, 87 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered in 2026 so far, leading to the arrest of 157 alleged drug peddlers.
During these operations, police seized narcotic substances valued at Rs 8,18,30,130, comprising 148.615 kg of ganja (cannabis), 7.165 kg of MDMA, 1.705 kg of hydro weed (high-potency cannabis) and other prohibited drugs.
Separately, 356 cases have been registered against 463 individuals for the consumption of narcotic substances during the same period.
The destruction programme was conducted at 11 am on July 29 at Ramky Energy and Environment Ltd. (Re Sustainability Healthcare Solutions Ltd.) in the Kolnadu Industrial Area of Mulki.
The seized narcotics were disposed of using scientific and environmentally friendly methods in the presence of the Drug Disposal Committee, after obtaining the necessary approval from the competent court.
The operation covered narcotic substances seized in 59 NDPS cases registered across 16 police stations under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru City police.
The drugs destroyed included:
- 450 kg of ganja
- 43.260 kg of MDMA
- 80 grams of charas
- 880 grams of hydro weed
- 1.200 kg of bhang
Altogether, narcotic substances valued at around Rs 82 crore were incinerated and disposed of.
Among the most significant consignments destroyed were 37 kg of MDMA worth nearly Rs 75 crore, seized in a case registered by the Mangaluru East police station in 2024. Also destroyed were around 4 kg of MDMA valued at approximately Rs 4.47 crore, seized in a 2025 case registered by Mulki police station.
The disposal also included 106 kg of ganja worth about Rs 20 lac, seized by Konaje police station, and 111 kg of ganja valued at approximately Rs 36 lac, recovered in a case registered by Moodbidri police station.
