New Delhi, Jul 30: Tech giant Meta has informed the Indian government that it has introduced enhanced safeguards and stricter oversight for posts made by prominent accounts, including that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the brief restriction of one of his Facebook videos, according to sources.

The company has told the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) that content posted by the prime minister and other high-profile accounts will now undergo multiple levels of review by senior company officials before any action is taken.

According to reports, Meta has also written to the government explaining the additional measures and is expected to meet government officials later this week or early next week.

The development follows the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Modi's Facebook video on the government's response to the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak issue, which was briefly restricted on the platform before being restored.

The IT Ministry had summoned Meta over the incident, after which the company apologised, admitting that the restriction was the result of an error.

IT Secretary S Krishnan said the government had taken note of Meta's apology but was dissatisfied with the explanation provided.

"It is good that they have apologised and admitted what they did was a mistake. But we are not happy with the explanation. It is not adequate, and we are seeking more details," Krishnan said.

Meta had maintained that the restriction was unintentional.

"The content was removed in error and has since been restored," a company spokesperson said.

The video, released on July 23, was Prime Minister Modi's first direct selfie-style address, in which he assured students that the government would take stringent measures to curb examination paper leaks.

Referring to the NEET-UG 2026 controversy, the prime minister said the government was committed to protecting students' interests and announced plans to introduce stricter legal provisions against paper leaks.

He also said directions had been issued to establish fast-track courts for speedy disposal of such cases and that a draft legislation proposing stringent punishment would be placed before the Union Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament.

Modi further asserted that the government had ensured that the academic year of nearly 22 lakh students remained unaffected, adding that the welfare and future of the country's youth remained its highest priority.
