New Delhi, Jul 30: Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport have arrested a passenger arriving from Bangkok after seizing nearly nine kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed, officials said on Thursday.
The passenger was intercepted on Wednesday after crossing the Customs Green Channel based on profiling carried out through the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS), an official statement said.
During X-ray screening of the passenger's baggage, Customs officials detected suspicious images, prompting a detailed examination.
The search led to the recovery of five vacuum-sealed packets containing a green-coloured substance suspected to be hydroponic weed (ganja), with a total net weight of 8,961 grams.
Hydroponic weed is a high-potency variety of cannabis cultivated in nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
The accused was arrested under Section 43(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The suspected contraband, along with the packaging and concealment materials, was seized under Section 43(a) of the NDPS Act.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics, officials said.
