Udupi: MLA Yashpal Suvarna questioned by police in hate speech case over Rahul Gandhi remarks

Udupi, July 30: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna appeared before the Udupi Town police on Thursday night in connection with a hate speech case registered against him over his alleged remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the Udupi District Congress, alleging that the BJP MLA made a hate speech targeting Rahul Gandhi during a protest organised by the Udupi district BJP in Udupi city on July 28.

On Wednesday, the Udupi Town police served a notice on Suvarna at his residence, directing him to appear before the investigating officer for questioning.

Complying with the notice, Suvarna arrived at the police station at around 8.25 pm and was questioned in connection with the case. Police are learnt to have asked him several questions regarding the alleged speech, to which he responded during the interrogation.

The questioning lasted for about an hour, after which the MLA left the police station at around 9.30 pm.

Further investigation into the case is under way.
