Milan, Jul 31: The world of football is in mourning as Franco Baresi, one of Italy’s greatest defenders and a true icon of AC Milan, has passed away at the age of 66.
Baresi, who had undergone surgery for a lung nodule in 2025, had been battling poor health for some time before his demise. Following the heartbreaking news, AC Milan released an emotional statement, remembering the unparalleled legacy of their former captain.
“The entire history of AC Milan is in mourning following the death of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will remain forever embedded in the club's DNA, just like his iconic number 6 shirt. The condolences that AC Milan extends to the family of Franco Baresi in this difficult time are shared by every Rossonero, who feels this loss as their own,” the club posted on X.
Franco Baresi’s career remains one of the most decorated in football history. Making his debut in the 1977/78 season, he went on to represent AC Milan in a staggering 716 matches. His leadership and defensive brilliance shaped the golden era of the Rossoneri, where he played alongside legends such as Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, and Ruud Gullit.
Between 1989 and 1995, Baresi featured in five Champions League finals, a feat previously achieved only by Real Madrid’s Alfredo Di Stefano. On the international stage, he was part of Italy’s 1982 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, cementing his place among the greatest defenders of all time.
Despite interest from several top European clubs during his prime, Baresi remained loyal to AC Milan throughout his career. His retirement in 1997 marked the end of an era, and in recognition of his immense contribution, the club retired his number six jersey. He later served as vice-president of AC Milan, continuing his association with the team he loved.
