Srinagar, Jul 31: Two non-local labourers were killed after terrorists opened fire on them in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Friday evening, officials said.

According to officials, the attackers targeted the two workers at a brick kiln in Kellam village of Kulgam district.

The injured labourers were immediately shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag for treatment. However, both succumbed to their injuries despite efforts by doctors to save them.

The deceased have been identified as Deepak, a resident of Chhattisgarh, and Bhupinder, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers have reached the spot to supervise the operation.

The attack comes amid intensified counter-terror operations across the Kashmir Valley following a series of recent militant incidents.

Last week, Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was killed in a terrorist attack while on Amarnath Yatra security duty in Anantnag.

In recent years, security agencies have noted a pattern of terrorists targeting non-local labourers, roadside vendors and truck drivers in an attempt to spread fear and disrupt economic activity in the Union Territory.

In October 2024, terrorists attacked a construction camp at Gagangeer in Ganderbal district, killing several non-local engineers and workers.

Security forces continue to maintain heightened vigil around infrastructure projects, transit routes and workplaces employing migrant labourers across Jammu and Kashmir.
