Glasgow, Aug 2: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh etched his name in the history books on Saturday by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men's 5,000m at the Commonwealth Games, clinching bronze to complete a memorable double at the 2026 edition.
The reigning Asian champion, who had earlier won silver in the men's 10,000m, also became the first Indian track and field athlete to secure two medals in a single Commonwealth Games, marking a landmark achievement for Indian athletics.
Gulveer clocked 13:24.95 to finish third in the 5,000m final on the concluding day of the athletics competition. Kenya's Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang won gold in 13:23.61, while Australia's Ky Robinson took silver with a time of 13:24.70.
The 28-year-old national record holder in both the 5,000m and 10,000m stayed with the leading pack throughout the race before producing a strong finish in the closing stages. He held off Kenya's Cornelius Kemboi by just 0.04 seconds to secure the bronze medal.
India added two more medals in the men's triple jump, with Praveen Chithravel claiming silver with a best effort of 16.58m and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran winning bronze with 16.52m. Jamaica's Jordan Scott bagged the gold with a jump of 16.72m.
In para athletics, Soman Rana won gold in the men's F57 shot put with a season's best throw of 13.40m, while fellow Indian Shubham Juyal secured silver with 13.28m. Cameroon's Cedric Azamdzi finished third with 12.57m.
Elsewhere, Priyanka Goswami finished seventh in the women's 10,000m race walk with a season's best timing of 45:53.93, while Ravina was disqualified. In the men's pole vault, Dev Kumar Meena finished fourth after clearing 5.30m, while Kuldeep Kumar ended sixth with 5.10m.
India's mixed 4x400m relay team of Vishal TK, Ansa Babu, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan and Rashdeep Kaur finished sixth in the final with a timing of 3:20.32.
Despite missing out on a gold medal in able-bodied athletics, India concluded its campaign with 10 medals — five silver and five bronze — recording its second-best athletics medal haul at the Commonwealth Games after the 12 medals won at the 2010 New Delhi Games.
