New Delhi, Aug 2: Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav faced a security scare on Sunday evening when a man allegedly hurled a slipper at him during a press conference at his official residence in the national capital.

The incident took place at the Lok Sabha MP’s residence on Pandara Road while he was interacting with media persons. The development raised concerns over security arrangements in the high-security area.

According to the MP’s supporters, the man who allegedly threw the slipper was identified as Sumit from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr. They claimed that another person present at the venue was carrying a knife and had intended to attack the MP.

Jaid Khan, Media Convenor of Purnia MP Pappu Yadav, said that three to four people were asking questions during the press conference when one of them suddenly threw a slipper towards the MP.

"At the same time, one of them was seen pulling out a knife. Those standing nearby tried to overpower the man with the knife, sparking a commotion," Khan said.

Following the incident, supporters of the MP allegedly assaulted Sumit before police detained him. Khan said that Yadav himself intervened, protected the man from further attack and handed him over to the police.

Sumit reportedly claimed that he was angry over alleged remarks made by Pappu Yadav against saints.

The incident came a day after a police complaint was filed against Pappu Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others over a skit performed on the Parliament premises related to Ram Mandir donations.

Later, Yadav alleged that he had been facing threats from anti-social elements after raising the issue of alleged irregularities in donations collected for Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir.

He further claimed that a bounty of up to Rs 51 lakh had been announced against him since he raised the matter.
