Bantwal, Aug 3: Heavy rains and the consequent school holiday turned into an unexpected day of fun for several children at a private school in Panemangaluru, where the playground was submerged under floodwaters on Monday.

With classes suspended due to incessant rain, children were seen splashing and playing in the waterlogged school ground, treating it like a swimming pool. While the scenes reflected carefree excitement, they also raised serious safety concerns as floodwaters can conceal open drains, sharp objects and uneven surfaces, posing a significant risk to children.

Meanwhile, the rising water level in the Netravati river has led to flooding in several low-lying areas of Bantwal taluk. Floodwaters entered around 15 houses in Panemangaluru and Aladka Padpu, affecting residents living along the riverbanks.

As a precautionary measure, the district administration shifted the affected families to safer locations. Officials are closely monitoring the situation as the river continues to flow above the danger mark following continuous rainfall in the region.

Authorities have urged parents to ensure that children stay away from flooded areas despite the school holiday, warning that even seemingly calm floodwaters can be extremely dangerous.
