Mangaluru, Aug 3: The Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), St Agnes College (Autonomous), successfully organized a four-day postgraduate induction and orientation programme from July 14 to 18 for newly admitted postgraduate students. The programme aimed to familiarize students with the institution's academic framework, research culture, professional ethics, and personal development while integrating the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Sr Dr M Venissa AC, principal, Sr Dr M Vinora AC, local superior and PG coordinator, and Dr Sabina D'Souza, IQAC coordinator.
The inaugural sessions featured Panchajanyeswari M Achar (PhD), head of the department of MCA, who spoke on ‘Netiquette and Digital Professionalism,’ emphasizing responsible digital citizenship, academic integrity, and professional online conduct. This was followed by Dr Vishala B K, research coordinator, who introduced students to the college library's extensive scholarly resources, digital databases, e-journals, and citation tools, enabling them to make effective use of research facilities.
On the second day, Shubarekha, Registrar, explained the academic and assessment framework, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE), attendance regulations, and examination procedures. Later, Dr Kavyashree, dean of PG Studies, addressed the importance of gender equity in higher education, encouraging students to build inclusive, respectful, and safe learning environments.
The third day focused on research and personal development. Ashwini K A (PhD), assistant professor, department of clinical psychology, delivered an insightful session on academic writing, research ethics, plagiarism prevention, and scholarly publishing. The students also actively participated in an interactive session titled ‘Who Am I,’ conducted by Amy Lydia Fonseca, area director, Division F, District 230, Toastmasters International. Through engaging activities and discussions, the session inspired students to discover their strengths, develop self-confidence, enhance emotional intelligence, and recognize the importance of effective communication and leadership in their academic and professional journeys.
The programme concluded with an engaging session by Dr V Premanand, head of the department of psychology, who emphasized self-leadership, resilience, stress management, and personal well-being as essential qualities for academic success. The valedictory session was led by Sr Dr M Vinora AC, who acquainted students with the vision, mission, values, and rich heritage of St Agnes College, motivating them to actively participate in campus life and strive for excellence.
Throughout the programme, every session was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), highlighting the institution's commitment to holistic and sustainable education.
The orientation programme provided students with a clear understanding of academic expectations, ethical research practices, institutional values, and personal growth, equipping them to embark confidently on their postgraduate journey. The centre for postgraduate studies and research expressed gratitude to the principal, the resource persons, faculty members, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
