Beltangady, Aug. 3: A 36-year-old man has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after he was allegedly found under the influence of a prohibited narcotic substance in a public place in Beltangady, police said.

The accused has been identified as Sriraj Shetty (36), a resident of Shakthinagar in Kuvettu village in Belthangady taluk.

According to the police, the incident came to light on the evening of August 2, when Beltangady police sub-inspector Anand M, accompanied by police personnel, was on routine patrol at Pottukere in Kuvettu village. During the patrol, the officers noticed a man behaving suspiciously and appearing to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

When questioned, the accused allegedly failed to provide satisfactory answers and continued speaking in an intoxicated state. On being subjected to further questioning, he reportedly admitted to having consumed a prohibited narcotic substance, police said.

The police subsequently produced the accused before the medical officer at the Belthangady Taluk Government Hospital, where a medical examination reportedly confirmed that he had consumed a narcotic substance.

Based on the medical report, the Beltangady police registered a case against the accused under Sections 27(b) and 22(a) of the NDPS Act and have launched further investigation into the incident.
