Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 4: Several parts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts received widespread rainfall on Monday, bringing relief in some areas while also causing damage to roads, drainage systems and infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for both districts, warning of more rain accompanied by strong winds.
Several parts of Dakshina Kannada, including Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur, Ullal, Thokkottu, Talapady, Mudipu, Kalladka, Mani, Uppinangady, Nelyadi, Beltangady, Sullia and Kadaba, received good rainfall during the morning hours. Rainfall turned moderate after noon.
The IMD has forecast widespread rain accompanied by gusty winds in the district until August 9 and has issued a Yellow Alert.
In Bantwal, the water level in the Netravati river, which had risen due to heavy rainfall in the ghat region and caused flood-like conditions, receded by Monday evening.
The river level, which stood at 8.3 metres on Sunday evening, dropped to 6.4 metres by Monday evening.
As a precautionary measure, members of 15 families from Aladka in Panemangaluru were shifted to safer locations. Floodwaters that had entered several houses and shops in parts of Bantwal receded by Monday morning, although water continued to remain in some agricultural fields.
Except for Byndoor taluk, all parts of Udupi district received good rainfall on Monday.
The district experienced moderate rain in the morning followed by cloudy weather with intermittent drizzle. Good rainfall was recorded after noon, while several rural areas witnessed heavy showers in the evening, causing streams, rivulets and rivers to swell.
Moderate rainfall was recorded during the morning in Udupi, Manipal, Kapu, Uchila, Brahmavar, Kundapur, Hebri and Karkala taluks, followed by cloudy conditions before good rainfall resumed in the afternoon.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Udupi district on August 4.
During the last 24 hours, rainfall recorded was 42.8 mm in Karkala, 41.7 mm in Hebri, 30.6 mm in Byndoor, 28.3 mm in Kundapur, 20.2 mm in Udupi, 15.7 mm in Brahmavar and 11 mm in Kapu, with the district recording an average rainfall of 30.1 mm.
Continuous rainfall over the past few days in Hebri and Karkala taluks has increased the flow in rivers and streams, resulting in rising water levels in several low-lying areas.
Heavy rain has continued in Mala, Hosmaru, Hebri, Kabbinale, Someshwara, Andaru, Mudradi and surrounding areas.
The Mundli dam on the Swarna river, which supplies drinking water to Karkala town, has reached full capacity and is now overflowing.
Meanwhile, on the Udupi–Shivamogga National Highway, near the Seetha River Nisargadhama, large trees fell on electricity poles, snapping an 11 kV power line and causing losses worth several lacs of rupees to MESCOM Hebri.
