Boston, Aug 5: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has officially declared August 15 as India Day, recognising the significant contributions of the Indian-American community to the state's social, economic and cultural development, while urging residents to observe the occasion appropriately.
In a proclamation issued on August 1, Healey highlighted the vital role played by Indian community organisations and advocates in promoting civic engagement, cultural exchange and mutual understanding through annual Independence Day celebrations and community service initiatives.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also issued a similar proclamation, declaring August 15 as India Day in the city. She welcomed the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and acknowledged the visit of Indian naval sailing vessel INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON-250 celebrations.
The proclamation noted that August 15, 2026, marks the 79th anniversary of India's independence from British colonial rule in 1947, describing it as a historic milestone that laid the foundation for the world's largest democracy.
It also highlighted that India has the world's largest diaspora, with more than 36 million people of Indian origin living abroad, including over five million in the United States, where they have made notable contributions to the country's social, economic and civic life.
Describing India as an ancient civilisation and a vibrant cultural mosaic, the proclamation praised the nation's rich diversity of ethnicities, religions, languages, customs and traditions while emphasising its enduring unity.
Healey further acknowledged the Indian-American community in Massachusetts for its achievements in medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service, stating that their contributions have enriched the Commonwealth's cultural and economic landscape.
The proclamation also recognised the continued efforts of the Indian-American community across Massachusetts in commemorating India's Independence Day through events celebrating the country's cultural heritage, democratic values and commitment to peace and progress.
