Patna, Aug 5: Two persons, including a sweet shop owner, were electrocuted after a live current reportedly passed through an iron pipe at a sweet shop in Bihar's Bhojpur district on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at a sweet shop near Chandi Chowk under the Chandi police station limits. The deceased were identified as Mahendra Sao (55), the owner of the shop, and Sanjay Kumar (27), a labourer employed there. Both were residents of Chandi village.

According to police, an insulation fault in the shop's electrical wiring allegedly caused an exposed wire to come into contact with an iron pipe, energising it. Mahendra Sao and Sanjay Kumar reportedly received a severe electric shock after touching the pipe and collapsed on the spot.

The incident created panic in the area, following which local residents rushed the two victims to Ara Sadar Hospital. However, both succumbed to their injuries before reaching the hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared them brought dead.

The tragedy plunged the victims' families into grief as relatives gathered at the hospital after receiving the news.

Chandi Station House Officer Rakesh Roshan confirmed that the two deaths were caused by electrocution. Preliminary investigation indicates that an electrical leakage or wiring fault led to the current passing through the iron pipe.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the electrical fault and the circumstances leading to the incident. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
