Bantwal, Aug 6: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a pillion rider and left the scooter rider critically injured after a speeding tipper truck collided with their two-wheeler at N G Circle in B C Road on Thursday, August 6. The deceased has been identified as Yashwanth Kulal, and the severely injured rider is Dayananda.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 6:30 pm when the victims were travelling from Mangaluru towards Dharmasthala on their scooter (KA-70-H-5059). A tipper truck (KA-19-AF-8073), driven by 33-year-old Salman Farooq, a resident of Pallamajalu in Bantwal, was heading from Kalladka towards Loretto.
Farooq was allegedly driving recklessly and at a high speed when he rammed into the scooter at N G Circle.
Following the crash, both Dayananda and Yashwanth were rushed to the district Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru with severe injuries. Doctors later declared Yashwanth Kulal dead, while Dayananda continues to receive medical attention in the intensive care unit (ICU).
The Bantwal Traffic police have registered a case under sections 281, 125(a), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) under crime number 99/2026.
The police have taken the accused driver into custody, and further legal proceedings are under way.
