Panaji, Aug 7: The Centre has notified the implementation of the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2025, paving the way for reservation of Assembly seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities in the state.

According to a notification published in The Gazette of India, the Act came into force on August 6, 2026, enabling the process of readjustment of Assembly constituencies and reservation of seats for Scheduled Tribes.

The move fulfils a long-pending demand of Goa's tribal communities, who have been seeking political representation in the State Assembly for several years.

Welcoming the development, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant termed it a "promise fulfilled" and said the legislation marks a significant milestone in ensuring long-overdue justice and political empowerment for Scheduled Tribe communities.

In a post on social media, Sawant thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for making the legislation a reality.

He said the implementation of the Act reflects the Centre's commitment to inclusive development and strengthens the democratic representation of Goa's tribal population.

The notification clears the way for the Election Commission and other authorities to undertake the process of constituency readjustment and identify Assembly seats to be reserved for Scheduled Tribes in accordance with the new law.
