Student went towards water without informing teachers, says Rane

Panaji, Aug 8: Poriem MLA and Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) Chairperson Deviya Rane on Saturday said the Class 11 student who drowned at Tonir-Kajredhat waterfall in Sattari had reportedly gone towards the water on his own without informing the teachers accompanying the excursion.

Addressing the media, Rane said the students were being monitored and warning signs had been installed at the site.

"The entire batch of students was monitored. The student went without informing, and there was a board giving a warning," Rane said.

Rane said people often venture into waterfalls and other water bodies despite safety warnings and later hold the government responsible when accidents occur.

"Not only the government, but everyone has to take responsibility," she said.

She also clarified that the waterfall does not come under the GTDC. Since it is located within the sanctuary jurisdiction, the site falls under the Forest Department.

Rane further pointed out that several water bodies and abandoned quarries across Goa remain unmanned and fill up during the monsoon. She said people often enter such places without being aware of the depth and other dangers involved.

Rane urged the public to strictly follow safety warnings and avoid entering waterfalls and other potentially dangerous water bodies, particularly during the monsoon season.
