New Delhi, Aug 9: The central government has extended the tenure of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Rahul Navin by one year, allowing him to continue in the post until August 13, 2027.

According to an order issued on August 8, 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension of Navin, a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, for one year beyond August 13, 2026. His tenure will continue until August 13, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Navin has served in the Income Tax Department for more than three decades and is regarded as an expert in international taxation. Between 2004 and 2008, he worked with the International Taxation Directorate in Mumbai, where he was involved in determining tax demands in several offshore transactions involving assets located in India.

Navin joined the Enforcement Directorate as Officer on Special Duty in November 2019 and was involved in work related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) mutual evaluation.

In November 2020, he was appointed Special Director (Headquarters) at the ED, where he oversaw coordination of money laundering investigations across the country, international cooperation and recovery of assets under international treaties.

He took charge as ED Director (in-charge) on September 15, 2023, and was formally appointed Director of the Enforcement Directorate on August 14, 2024.

Under his leadership, the ED has placed greater emphasis on tracing proceeds of crime and taking action against assets allegedly linked to economic offences. The agency has also strengthened its risk-based approach to initiating investigations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

According to the ED's annual report, the risk assessment process has been systematised through regular meetings of the Risk Assessment Management Committee. The agency has also prepared comprehensive manuals covering the PMLA, Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) to bring greater uniformity to investigative and administrative procedures.

The ED has also expanded its international cooperation in financial crime investigations during Navin's tenure. In March 2025, the agency and Mauritius' Financial Crimes Commission signed an agreement to cooperate in tackling financial crimes and money laundering.

In September 2025, the ED conducted a five-day capacity-building programme in Mauritius on money laundering and financial intelligence for officials of the Financial Crimes Commission.
The ED's annual report noted that India was placed in the higher-rated category of regular follow-up in the FATF's 2024 Mutual Evaluation. The agency described the assessment as an important indicator of the strength of India's anti-money laundering framework and the capabilities of institutions involved in combating financial crimes.

The ED has continued to take action in cases involving bank fraud, investment scams, digital-arrest cyber fraud, illegal mining and forged documents across various states.

In a recent case, the agency's Lucknow Zonal Office attached movable and immovable assets worth around Rs 25.44 crore in connection with alleged fake degrees and forged educational documents.

In another case involving Bhasin Infotech and Infrastructure and related entities, the ED attached 389 immovable properties valued at approximately Rs 240.03 crore, which it said had a current market value of more than Rs 700 crore.

The agency has also attached assets worth around Rs 92.91 crore in a separate bank-fraud case. In another digital-arrest cyber-fraud investigation, cash, foreign currency, gold and jewellery, vehicles and digital devices were seized or frozen.

With the latest extension, Navin will continue to lead the ED as the agency pursues investigations into money laundering, financial fraud and other economic offences.
