Guwahati, Aug 10: The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Monday, with the death toll rising to 100 after two more fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, according to an official bulletin.

More than 1.37 lakh people have been affected by the floods across seven districts, while hundreds of villages remain inundated.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said 456 villages are under water and 11,933.46 hectares of crop area have been damaged.

The administration is currently operating 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres across six districts, providing shelter to 49,061 people.

According to the ASDMA's daily flood bulletin issued on Sunday night, the latest two deaths were reported from Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, taking the total number of flood-related fatalities in the state this year to 100.

More than 1,37,500 people have been affected in Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.

Golaghat is the worst-affected district, with nearly 70,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar, where almost 40,000 people are facing the impact of the floods. More than 16,000 people have been affected in Jorhat.

An ASDMA official said several rivers are flowing above the danger mark, raising concerns that the flooding could spread to additional areas.

The Dhansiri river at Golaghat and Numaligarh and the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi are flowing above the danger level, the official said.

"Due to a steady rise in the water level of Dhansiri in Golaghat district, people have been advised to stay away from the river," she said.

The overall flood situation continues to remain severe, with rising fatalities, widespread inundation and extensive crop damage leaving thousands of people dependent on relief assistance.
