Leh, Aug 13: Two moderate earthquakes jolted the Union Territory of Ladakh within a span of nearly four hours on Thursday, triggering concern among residents in the seismically active region.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the stronger of the two tremors, measuring 5.5 magnitude, occurred at 6.05 am with its epicentre in Leh. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located at latitude 36.88 degrees north and longitude 74.402 degrees east.

Another earthquake measuring 4.3 magnitude struck at 9.54 am, also in the Leh region. The NCS said the second tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre at latitude 36.76 degrees north and longitude 75.326 degrees east.

The two earthquakes occurred within approximately four hours of each other, prompting fear among residents in the region.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property following the tremors.

The back-to-back tremors have once again highlighted the seismic vulnerability of Ladakh, which frequently experiences earthquake activity. Authorities have not reported any major disruption so far.
