Mangaluru, Aug 14: Yenepoya School of Engineering and Technology (YSET) conducted its student council installation programme 2026 with enthusiasm and active participation from students and faculty Mentors. The programme marked the formal commencement of the Student Council’s activities and the assumption of responsibilities by the newly appointed student leaders.
The programme was graced by Dr Bhagya B Sharma, deputy director, Centre for Environmental Studies, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), as the chief guest, and Malini Hebbar, principal, Swastika School, as the guest of honor & resource person. The programme was coordinated by Prof Sushma Soans - students council Mentor. Nisha and Neha compered the programme gracefully.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Bhagya B Sharma highlighted the importance of effective communication in leadership. She emphasised the need for leaders to communicate clearly, listen actively, understand others and build meaningful connections with their teams. Her address encouraged the newly appointed student leaders to approach their responsibilities with confidence, clarity and commitment.
As part of the leadership development component, Malini Hebbar delivered a leadership lecture on ‘Public Speaking and Effective Communication.’ The session focused on developing confidence in public speaking, expressing ideas clearly and using effective communication as an essential leadership skill. The session provided students with practical insights into communicating effectively and engaging their audience.
The newly constituted Student Council was formally introduced, with Ayeshath Suha assuming the position of Student Council president and Ashiq as Student Council secretary. Representatives of student clubs and initiatives, including YenKalakar, YenTech and Yenlit, along with class representatives, were also formally recognized.
The highlight of the programme was the oath-taking ceremony, administered by Dr R G D’Souza, dean, faculty of Engineering & Technology. The Student Council members, club – association office bearers and class representatives pledged to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, honesty, teamwork and commitment to student welfare.
In his presidential address, Dr R G D’Souza urged the student leaders to ‘Listen, Connect and Create’, emphasizing that leadership is a responsibility rather than merely a position. He encouraged students to bring forward ideas, identify problems and actively participate in building a vibrant student community. A key message of the dean’s address was ‘Respond, Don’t React.’ He reminded the student leaders that leadership often involves facing criticism, disagreements and challenging situations. Rather than responding impulsively, leaders should learn to pause, think and respond with wisdom and responsibility.
The programme also reinforced the importance of leadership, teamwork, communication and student participation, strengthening the bond between students, faculty and the institution.The event concluded on a positive note, with the newly installed student leaders expressing their readiness to take forward their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the academic and co-curricular life of Yenepoya School of Engineering and Technology.
